January 8th Memorial and Pima County Historic Courthouse Renovations
TUCSON, AZ
The January 8th Memorial honors the victims of the 2011 Tucson shooting with a reflective fountain and six gardens, each dedicated to a victim. Symbolic elements in the fountain walls and bollard lighting tell the story of the victims, emergency responders, and the Tucson community.
Designed by Chee Salette, a Glendale, California-based firm, McGann & Associates was added by Pima County Facilities Management to the team as the local landscape architect. McGann & Associates provided expertise on the plant palette, planting and irrigation design for the adjacent Pima County Historic Courthouse, and construction services.
Construction was completed by December 3, 2020, to allow a private preview for victims, families, and first responders before the 10-year anniversary event on January 8, 2021. McGann & Associates played a key role in ensuring timely completion.
Martha Cooper Library Expansion
TUCSON, AZ
Located in Tucson's Midtown Garden District, the Martha Cooper Library serves both the surrounding neighborhood and the city. This expansion adds 7,000 square feet to the existing 7,700 square foot library, enhancing community meeting spaces, expanding programming options, and providing more efficient workspace for staff.
As part of the landscape design, the expansion integrates the surrounding environment into the library experience. The outdoor areas are designed to foster connection with the landscape, including outdoor reading patios that overlook native desert plantings, offering quiet, relaxing spaces for patrons. Green walls create a natural screen around service areas, providing both functional privacy and a welcoming aesthetic for visitors.
The project emphasizes the library’s relationship with the Garden District, providing seamless transitions between indoor and outdoor spaces, and supporting the library's role as a community hub.
